Bus Monitor – LSK

Under the direction of the Director of Education, the bus monitor is responsible for assisting the bus driver in maintaining discipline on the school bus. This includes monitoring and assisting students while the bus is in operation and working in collaboration with the bus driver to document incidents and student behaviour.
The bus monitor’s work schedule will be determined by the Supervisor and LSK School regarding the transportation route and time frames which will include number of trips per day. Please note that this schedule can change during unexpected emergencies or school closures. The bus monitor may be assigned to a different bus, from time to time, as determined by the supervisor.
- Assists the bus driver in maintaining order on the bus and ensures the safety of students while entering, riding, and departing from the bus.
- Assists children getting on and off the bus safely and directing them to assigned seats when required.
- Ensures all passengers are properly seated while riding the bus.
- Maintains the order and behavior of students on the bus so the driver is not distracted while driving.
- Maintains a positive, calm attitude and a soft voice while on the bus.
- Protects all students from physical and verbal abuse as well as bullying.
- Provides written reports of student behaviour to parents when necessary.
- Notifies Bus driver/principal/parent of concerns regarding the children’s health or behaviours.
- Checks the bus to assure there are no students remaining on the bus at the end of each route.
- Thoroughly cleans the bus by washing floors, wiping seats, cleaning windows, cleaning up spills and removing trashing and litter on a daily basis.
- Maintains a list of all students authorized to ride the bus.
- Updates bus seating chart as needed.
- Other related duties as determined by the supervisor.
- Must have, or be willing to obtain, a CPR and First Aid Certification as well as training in using epi-pens.
- Must have the ability to communicate well with the youth as well as children with special needs.
- Preference will be given to applicants from a Mi’kmaq First Nations Community.
- A satisfactory criminal record check and child abuse registry is required.
This position includes health, dental and life insurance as well as an employer pension plan. The start date for this position will dependent on the school re-opening.
