Employment & Training

Our mission is to provide programs and services that assist band members in preparing for, obtaining and maintaining employment.

Band members who are unemployed or underemployed and live within Nova Scotia are eligible for our programs and services.

Mi’kmaq Employment Training Secretariat (METS)

The Sipekne’katik Employment and Training Program operates under a sub-agreement with the Mi’kmaq Employment Training Secretariat (METS) to offer employment and training services to band members residing in Nova Scotia. METS is a not-for-profit organization funded by Service Canada to offer employment and training programming to all 13 First Nation communities in Nova Scotia and the Mi’kmaq Native Friendship Centre.

  • Native employment officers can assist with:

    • referral services to other agencies

    • administrative services to seek other funding for more programming/ training opportunities

    • liaise with government departments

    • offering skill development

    • work experience guidance

    • administering the summer student work experience program

    • providing youth employment services

    • completing needs assessments

    • creating return-to-work action plans

    • providing assistance with resume writing

    • offering training for interviews, interview skills and mock-interviews

    • help with developing job search skills

    • case management and follow-up

    • referrals to other organizations as needed.
