1919 Land Claim

In July 2020, Sipekne'katik and the Millbrook First Nation finalized an agreement with the Government of Canada to settle the Halifax County 1919 Invalid Surrender Specific Claim. All parties agree to a settlement amount of $49,204,071.

The Sipekne'katik Band oversaw the financial distribution of the settlement to its members who were 19 years of age and older and put funds in trust for members under 18. Through the Band administration, members were able to apply for their disbursement.

This settlement acknowledges the land rights of our people.
