Band Membership

As our community grows, there are official processes to become a registered member of the Sipekne’katik band.

Are you eligible?

To become a member of the Sipekne’katik band, one of the following must apply:

  1. One or both of your parents are registered or are entitled to be registered

  2. One or both of your grandparents are registered or entitled to be registered

  3. One or more of your immediate family (parents, brothers, sisters) or your extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins) are registered or are entitled to be registered.

If any of the above criteria apply to you, please complete the application for Indian Status and guarantor forms. You must submit the original signed forms and your original birth certificate. Your guarantor must sign all front and back photocopies of supporting ID.

Transfering to the Sipekne’katik Band

Send written requests for transfer to the Membership office. Please explain which of the criteria listed below you fall under. Please note the Sipekne’katik Band does not take transfer requests from individuals registered on the General Band list.

The Sipekne’katik Band will consider requests for membership transfer or status Indians based meeting the requirements of one or more of the following criteria:

  • Children of Sipekne’katik Band members (first-generation), including minor children or dependants

  • Spouses of Sipekne’katik Band members, who are entitled to registration under the Indian Act

  • Those affected by marriage before April 17, 1985, who were automatically transferred to the husband’s band and are now seeking to transfer back to the Sipekne’katik Band

  • People requesting to transfer back to the Sipekne’katik Band after being transferred to another band.

  • Minor children of a band member’s spouse, who are entitled to registration under the Indian Act (adopted and non-adopted)

  • People living in Sipekne’katik, who are members of another band but have been living in Sipekne’katik for an extended period of time (minimum five-ten years)
